Get ready for the 19-20 August

Join us in solving pressing environmental challenges in Aotearoa using Artificial Intelligence.

The AI Institute is hosting an AI for the Environment Hackathon at the University of Waikato on the 19-20 August 2023.

This event is part of Celebrating “Fifty Years of Computing” at the University of Waikato.

AI For the Environment Hackathon

A hackathon is a design & coding sprint where “hackers”, participants with technical and non-technical backgrounds, come together as a team to build exciting projects and create a collaborative environment for solving a specific problem.

For this hackathon, we will focus on environmental issues in New Zealand. Throughout the hackathon, you will learn many new skills, meet like-minded peers, and network with sponsors and mentors.

At the end of the two days, you will get a chance to demo your project and maybe go home with some prizes! The winning team will present at the AI Summit on September 21.

Can I participate?

The main goal of a hackathon is to find an effective solution to a problem using Artificial Intelligence.
First, contact your friends and register as a team (3 to 5 people). Look below for the special discount with the code “GoldenJubilee“.
Experience in any environmental field and computer science is required.

Don’t be shy! The challenge is open to beginners.

If you are passionate about the environment but don’t have skills in Artificial, Intelligence, it’s an excellent way to start. Mentors will be available to help you, and you can learn new skills quickly.

What if I don’t have a team? Can I still participate?

If you don’t already have a team, that’s ok too. Everyone is encouraged to come along.
We will help you to find one.

Which tools/software?

You are free to use any tool and software you want.
The day before the Hackathon, we will organise a Masterclass to show you which tools you can use and how to use them.
All the tools are open source.
